Ladies XC team score again

Club members were out in force again, at the weekend, for match number two of the THREE COUNTIES CROSS COUNTRY LEAGUE in Hunsbury Country Park, Northamptonshire.

Conditions were perfect for navigating the twisting course through wooded trails and fields.  For the second time running the ladies team were in 2nd place behind local rivals Bedford.  The men's team were 6th in this match, down on their previous placing despite the appearance of their top athletes, demonstrating the incredibly high standard of the competition.

The next match is on Sunday 23rd November at Leighton Buzzard.

Fourth place for marathon virgin, Craig

It was a superb first marathon experience for Craig Brown last weekend in the STEVENAGE MARATHON, and even though he found it tough going towards the end, he still managed to finish in 4th place in a fantastic time of 2h 56m 51s.

Also competing was marathon veteran, and club legend, Ian Skerratt.  Ian’s time of 3h 44m 34s earned him a 4th place in the male vet 60-69 category.

Juliet's Rave Run

Congratulations to Juliet Naylor for being the first lady to finish at the LODE HALF MARATHON, in the Cambridgeshire fens, last weekend.  Unfortunately, the route had to be reduced to 11 miles because the authorities were still trying to break up a rave that had begun the night before.

Although the wet and windy weather conditions weren’t conducive for a good run, Juliet’s finish time was a respectable 1h 11m 14s.

Pete's leap of faith

Our mud warriors got off to a great start at the Three Counties Cross Country League in Wellingborough, last Sunday, with the ladies team securing second place, equal on points with the winners on the day, Bedford Harriers.  The men’s team finished seventh.

The multi-lap course at Croyland Park is deceptively draining, with switch-back turns making the most of the contours on offer to sap the strength from runners legs. Four steep, deep and muddy stream crossings just added to the effort needed for all but those brave enough to leap straight over.  All of our runners put in great performances for this first match of the season.

Men's scoring team:
Paul Davies 9th, Adam Murphy 27th, Nick Haworth 29th, Paul Cooke 66th, Giles Hawthorne 72nd, Damien Pitts 91st, Thom Berkery 117th,

Women's scoring team:
Juliet Naylor 5th, Isobel Everest 8th, Alice Ebbage 12th

Non-scorers:
Fiona Wynde 23rd, Charlie Arnold 123rd, Simon Strong 160th, Peter Howell 164th, Melanie Brooks 79th.

No trophy at Ampthill but a good start to the season

For some the Ampthill Trophy heralds the start of the cross country season and an opportunity to test the legs over this undulating, traffic-free route around the picturesque surroundings of Ampthill Park.

Well done to Adam Murphy, Rohan Ford and Daniel Hemming who all achieved excellent placings in their individual races.  No trophy this time, however, but lots of potential for the forthcoming cross country season.

Everyone's a winner

Once again it has been an amazing year for Biggleswade AC's junior members and the attendance at the club's Junior Presentation Evening demonstrated this.

Attended by a large number of junior members, and their parents, as well as a number of senior members, this event has grown in size and popularity over the years, thanks to the superb organisation of Mandie.

Forty youngsters each received a certificate and a Biggleswade AC wristband, to acknowledge their contribution to the club over the past 12 months, and most were there on the night to receive their award in person.

This was also an occasion to present the Club Championship medals and the Amateur Athletic Association Standards achievements.

The award for the 'Most Improved Athlete 2014 went to Ferdinand Kricks, with runners-up Hannah Ridley and Connor Trudgill.

The 'Most Improved Male Athlete 2014' was Morgan Webster with Frankie Riley receiving the award for the girls.

Chloe Emery won the 'Best Performance of 2014' for the girls whilst Callum Dickson-Earle was recognised as the boys winner.  Chloe was also given special recognition for her outstanding performance this year in the pentathlon.

There was also recognition for those who had accumulated the most number of points based upon attendance at training and competing at events.  The successful winners were: Emily Day (Under 13 Girls), Rohan Ford (Under 13 Boys), Nathan Dodds (Under 15 Boys), Rebecca Lee (Under 17 Ladies) and Cybil Laobena (Under 17 Mens).

The club’s coaches didn’t leave empty handed either; a special presentation of a t-shirt with the slogan 'Keep Calm & Coach' was made to David Brown, Pete Lawson, Alison Ridley, Ken Prior, Jamie Webster and Sonia Brown for their commitment to the junior athletes over the years.  Sadly, Coach Ken announced that he was retiring from coaching at the end of the year.

Mandie was also presented with a bouquet of flowers and chocolates by way of thanks for organising the event.

Below is a list of all the Junior Club Champions for 2014 and those who achieved AAA Standards Awards ... well done everyone.

Race report for week ending 12th October, 2014

Two Biggleswade AC runners took part in the annual RAF HENLOW 10 MILE midweek race on Wednesday 8th October, and produced some excellent times after a busy race schedule for them both.  Following a fast 10k event 4 days earlier, Phil Housden ran a controlled race to finish in a very respectable 77mins 58secs. Chris Clarke decided at the last minute to enter this race, even though it was just 4 days after running the tough Clarendon Marathon. This did not seem to affect his performance and he finished strongly to record of time of 79mins 33secs, one minute faster than last year.

Congratulations to Biggleswade AC’s U13 boys cross-country team who came 3rd at the CHILTERN CROSS COUNTRY LEAGUE match held at Cassiobury Park near Watford last weekend.  The club’s under 17 girls team also did well and are currently sitting in 4th place in the league.  Hannah Ridley did exceptionally well with a 4th place overall in the U17/Junior ladies race and 2nd place in her age category.  Meanwhile Jared Taylor scored valuable points for the team finishing 2nd in his age category.

But it’s not just the juniors who were running well at the weekend.  Craig Brown and Paul Davies achieved some superb times at the GREAT EAST RUN last Sunday. Out of 3,800 runners Craig and Paul finished in the top 100.  Mel Wilkinson also managed to achieve a new personal best time.

And whilst on their club tour to the Cotswolds, 13 members of Biggleswade Athletic Club decided to try out the FOREST OF DEAN MARATHON/HALF MARATHON/10K.  The varied distances were possible owing to the 5K circular route, which proved very popular, with some choosing to tackle 4 laps whilst others opted for 2 and 3 laps.  However, Monika Molnar decided to give the full marathon distance a go (8 laps in total) and managed this in an amazing 3hrs 50mins.
